Carbon dioxide (chemical formula CO₂) is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas formed by the combination of one carbon atom and two oxygen atoms. It is widely distributed in nature and is an important part of both biological and industrial processes. Carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere by plants, animals, and humans through respiration, and is consumed by plants in photosynthesis.
 
 

Properties of Carbon Dioxide Gas:

Areas of Use of Carbon Dioxide Gas:

  • Fizzy Drinks: Carbon dioxide is used to make carbonated drinks carbonated. Adding carbon dioxide to drinks helps the drink have a foamy and refreshing structure.
  • Fire Extinguishers: Carbon dioxide gas is widely used in fire extinguishers. Carbon dioxide removes oxygen from the environment to extinguish the fire and cools the fire area.
  • Dry Ice (Solid Carbon Dioxide): Carbon dioxide becomes solid at low temperatures and is known as dry ice. Dry ice is used in cooling and freezing processes, as well as special effects and smoke production.
  • Agriculture and Greenhouse: Carbon dioxide is used to accelerate plant growth in greenhouses. Plants grow and develop by using carbon dioxide during photosynthesis.
  • Medical Applications: Carbon dioxide is used to expand body cavities during some surgical procedures (e.g. laparoscopy).
  • Chemical Industry: Carbon dioxide is used as a raw material in chemical syntheses. It is especially used in the production of chemicals such as urea.
